Creamsicle Cake

Creamsicle Cake

original recipe: http://save-a-lot.com/recipes/creamsicle-cake

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Bake the cake as directed in a 9x13" pan. Let cake cool completely. Poke holes in cooled cake. Mix 1 package orange gelatin dessert with 1 c. boiling water and 1 c. cold water. Pour over cake. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours. Mix pudding mix with cold milk the other package of orange gelatin dessert and vanilla. Beat by hand with a whisk until thickened. Fold in the whipped topping. Frost the cake with the pudding mixture.

Note:

This delicious cake really does taste like a creamsicle! This is a great crowd pleaser I always get lots of compliments when I bring this to a pot luck or family gathering. Its one of those recipes everyone wants a copy of. The gelatin dessert poured over the cake gives it ribbons of orange that look and taste great and the frosting.....you could eat it right out of the bowl!

  1. How do you get the layers if it's baked in a 9x13?

  2. i poured the jello over the cake and it immediately absorbed into it. I don't know how youre supposed to get the orange gelatin layer on top of the cake when it soaks in??

    1. It is supposed to soak in. I'm sure the picture above is a different recipe because Jello poured over cake will always soak in, unless you let it thicken slightly first.

  3. For a layered Creamsicle Cake: Make the cake batter as directed, then batter pour evenly into 3 round 9" cake pans. Bake cakes as directed and let cool. Then, make the orange gelatin as directed on the package — but with this version, you'll let the gelatin set up instead of pouring it into the cake. We recommend using your round cake pans, or using a 13x17" jelly roll pan (1" deep cookie sheet with edges). Once you pour the liquid gelatin mixture into the pans, it will need to be refrigerated for about 4 hours. Meanwhile, make the pudding mixture according to the original recipe. Finally, layer in this order: cake, gelatin pudding mixture. Repeat once more for a 6-layered Creamsicle Cake.

  10. This recipe doesn't work in a 9x13 pan. There isn't enough jello initially and like another commenter said, it absorbs into the cake, or runs to the sides. Probably works better if you use two boxes of jello for the jlayer.

  15. Same questions as Bruce - box cake mixes usually call for 3 eggs to begin with.

  16. The top recipe is another version of the cake but not the one for the recipe. These cakes can also be called Jello Dream Cakes. They are refrigerator cakes if you didn't realize that. You only need the eggs for the cake mix. I poke holes in the cake after it cools with the other end of a wooden/plastic spoon. That way the holes are bigger and easier to pour in the jello. BUT you only use 3/4 cup of boiling water to dissolve the jello and then 1/2 cup of cold water. Because you want the jello to be a little thicker to pour it in the holes. Some of it will run around the edges and that's ok. I make another version of this cake. I use Lemon Supreme Cake and lime jello. For the topping: I first put a glass bowl in the freezer. It helps the topping to set easier. But I use "instant" lemon pudding, 1 envelope of whipped topping mix (Dreamwhip-instead of cool whip) and 1 1/2 cup of milk and mix until it is stiff. Takes about 10 or so minutes. These are my favorite cakes. Great for summers bcs they are so light and refreshing.

    1. First time I made the Creamsicle cake. It was alright but still my favorite is the Lemon Dream Cake. With the lemon cake and the lemon topping it is just the best. My all time favorite cake is the lemon.

  17. I poured the instant jello into the boiling water then added the milk. As soon as I started stirring, it together, the milk formed a giant clumpy ball. I poured the jello mix over the cake and threw away the glob. Some of the small thickened part got on/in my cake. If that milk curdled is it going to make my cake taste nasty? Should I throw it out and start all over? :(

    1. You were supposed to mix the MILK with the PUDDING, and THEN ADD the orange Jello POWDER--NO BOILING WATER OR COLD WATER EITHER FOR THIS STEP. :-)

  18. When making the jello, it only calls for water, no milk. 1 cup boiling water and 1 cup cold water.
